Dr. Jeannin entered his first cave in August 1980 and spent much of this subsequent years in the Swiss greatest alpine caves of Siebenhengste and Hölloch. He has also visited caves and karst areas across the world (Mexico, USA, Oman, Uzbekistan and many European countries).

At the age of 18 he organized his first tracing experiment, and decided to study geology and hydrogeology. His PhD was dedicated to karst hydrogeology and he created the Swiss Institute of Speleology and Karst-Studies (SISKA) in 2000.

Dr. Jeannin has bridged the divide between being a caver and understanding caves and karst from the inside, and being also a practicing hydrogeologist that has applied analytical techniques to better conceptualize groundwater flow and karst processes.

Based on academic research Jeannin’s team developed a method for understanding karst groundwater flowpaths (KARSYS), which is used for resources assessment, for contamination issues, and for evaluating the environmental impact of construction in karst.

The team also developed a tool for predicting karst characteristics in tunnel construction. This method was expanded to predict sinkhole collapses and flood hazards in karst.

Dr. Jeannin is a specialist of heat transport in karst and he has investigated carbonate dissolution as a carbon sink for the Earth atmosphere over the past 5 years. He also consults in assessing karst-related aspects in Swiss nuclear repositories.
